• A vasectomy is a quick minor procedure designed to create permanent sterility. During the procedure, the skin to the scrotum is numbed. A small opening is made in the skin. A small piece of the tube is cut, the insides are cauterized and stitch is placed around the tube. The opening is closed with a dissolveable stitch.

  • Most vasectomies take about 15 minutes. The timing can vary based on anatomy.

This may seem fast, but that is because of the vast experience we have with performing the procedure.

  • Vasectomy is a very straight forward procedure, but like any procedure, there are some short term risks:

    • Skin infection

    • Discomfort

    • Bleeding

    • Hematoma formation (a deep bruise)

    • Skin bruising

    • Scrotal swelling

Long term risks of vasectomy include

    • Risk of failure- in very rare situation (1 in 10,000) the tubes can reconnect. We use special techniques to reduce the probability.

    • Chronic testicular discomfort. This is quite rare (<1%) and typically responds to ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

  • Having a vasectomy makes no changes to testosterone.

Testosterone is produced in the testicles and travels through the body though the blood stream. The procedure does not impact blood flow so testosterone is unchanged.

  • Having a vasectomy has no impact on erectile function, orgasm, or ejaculation. You will experience the same performance and sensation once you have fully healed.

Most of the fluid that is ejaculated comes from the prostate which is not impacted by the procedure. The volume and consistency of the ejaculate is the same, but there is no sperm in it.

  • The goal of vasectomy is permanent sterilization. You should be sure that you no longer want to have children before proceeding.

Vasectomy reversals are possible, but they are not cheap, easy, or guaranteed to be successful.

Sperm banking is an option, but the storage and use can be costly. Click here for more information about banking.

  • Pro-Nox is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide similar to “laughing gas”. It is self administered by breathing in an out of a tube. The medication induces relaxation and has a calming effect. This has been shown to reduce pain, anxiety, and stress. You are still aware during the procedure, but comfortable.

There are not many risks associated with Pro-Nox. Some patients feel a little light headed for a few minutes and rarely have a headache.

Unlike general anesthesia or sedation, nitrous oxide is eliminated from your system in minutes. This allows our patients to drive themselves home after the procedure.
